The past year has been particularly challenging.

In addition to dealing with the ongoing disruption caused by the COVID pandemic, many people and pets in our community are facing personal crises.  

The requests for help that we receive vary day to day. Every pet, every human and every circumstance is unique. However, our ground-breaking and innovative Veterinary Social Work (VSW) service professionally and consistently responds to the daily enquiries and requests.

Catherine and her daughter were experiencing family violence and living in an unsafe home. Because they couldn’t bear to leave their cherished dog Lola, they remained in a dangerous situation. Lola is a rather bouncy kelpie cross with a zest for life and adventure. Catherine sought assistance from a local family violence support agency, who contacted us. Cherished Pets helped them out with discrete, safe and secure pet care for Lola through the critical stages of the crisis.
We gave Lola the best of care until she could be reunited with her family, including making sure she had her annual vaccination, good food and parasite prevention.

Eleanor was struggling with her mental health and needed to be admitted to hospital for psychiatric care, but she was refusing to go for fear of not having anyone to care for her cherished girl, Poppy. Her social worker contacted Cherished Pets and we put together a care plan for Poppy, who was taken into the home of one of our volunteer respite carers and treated like one of the family.

Milo urgently needed major ear surgery. Cherished Pets coordinated the procedure with our wonderful partners, Newtown Veterinary Hospital. Milo’s elderly human doesn’t drive so we transported Milo to the hospital for her surgery and our skilled, respite carer provided the postoperative care Milo needed to ensure success of the delicate procedure and Milo’s speedy recovery to get her back home.

Cherished Pets now has two qualified social workers on our team, who respond to and manage crisis care requests, as well as calls for home pet care assistance. Our Veterinary
Social Workers are integral to our team and enable us to deliver professional socially focussed services for pet owners in our community.
