Alicia, Natalie and Dr Jen O’Dwyer (pictured above with Dr Rebeca Garcia Pinillos) recently represented Cherished Pets at the One Welfare Conference II held in Sydney. The conference brought together national and international experts across animal welfare, human healthcare, conservation and environmental science to share ideas and consider solutions to complex problems impacting on animals, people and the environment.
We first met Poppy when her owner contacted us seeking someone to help her with walking Poppy. Poppy is a beautiful, young greyhound who was adopted from GAWS into a loving home and quickly became a close companion. After having a fall, Poppy’s owner was not able to take Poppy on the daily walks she needed. Her kind next door neighbour helped out by taking Poppy for a couple of walks a week but Poppy needed a daily walk. We introduced Poppy and her owner to one of our caring volunteers who started taking Poppy for walks.
AniPal is a social enterprise designed to repurpose plastics while educating veterinary clients and partners about the impact of plastics and the importance of clean-up initiatives. The ultimate aim of AniPal is to help the veterinary and animal communities transition to more sustainable practices, lowering their environmental impact. As a starting point, AniPal provides recycled plastic alternatives for a number of animal products that are made from virgin plastic.
As Cherished Pets Foundation moves in to our 5th year, we are filled with gratitude and pride with our achievements to date and would like to thank everyone in our broader Cherished Pets community for supporting us this far.
We need your support so that we can continue to provide the very special care we deliver to vulnerable elderly folk and people living with disabilities in our region.
Winter has hit with a vengeance. In the past few weeks we have experienced very cold temperatures, welcomed rain and even snow in some areas of Australia.
For pets experiencing chronic illness, pain and arthritis, cold weather events are a challenge. For many of our older cherished pets, the cold weather simply tips them over the edge.
As we move in to Winter we are urging people to consider the health and wellbeing of their cherished pets through this challenging season.
The CP Team was deeply saddened last month by the untimely passing of our very dearly loved cherished pet, Jasmine. Jasmine was a beautiful, gentle, kind and endearing blue Whippet girl born in May 2015.
Jasmine and her exuberant canine buddy Dallas, along with their beautiful human, Pamela, have been recipients of our community pet care service since 2016. They recently relocated to Melbourne but we have stayed in contact and offered some support from afar.
Wow, 2018 was yet another huge year in the journey of Cherished Pets. As we move in to our 5th year of offering our very special service, we reflect on 2018 and its highlights, lessons and connections.
Thank YOU for the role you continue to play in helping us grow our organisation, and move towards our shared dream so that the benefits and joy of companion pets can be accessible to all.
The CP Team was moved and saddened last month by the passing of three beloved clients in a very short space of time - Peter Hill, Yvonne Clark and Maureen Williams. They were all Cherished Pet Foundation recipients who had very special, loving bonds with their cherished pets. We are happy that we could support each and every one of their relationships and enable them to have a loving companion by their side.
Maureen was only recently referred to our service by her health provider due to concern about her deteriorating health and the urgent need to establish a care plan for her very cherished 4 year old German Shepherd, Jac.
Jac is only young and suffers a serious immune-mediated condition that affects his gastrointestinal system. He is under the care of specialists and requires ongoing medication and very strict diet and lifestyle restrictions to maintain his health.
There is nothing like living the experience to learn.
Meet Roxy, our 15 year old blind, deaf, demented 2kg Yorkshire Terrier who has given us several “deaths door” scares over the past two years, but on she goes, defying the odds and living an enriched life, at least during the 2-3 hours a day that she is actually awake.
Opening my email inbox at work on a Monday morning there was Molly. I recognised her photo from the night before when I had seen her profile on Pet Rescue. Seeing her in my inbox the following day must be a sure sign, I thought. A work colleague was her foster mum and I had been searching for a dog to adopt since my 17-year-old dog had reached the end of her life, nine months earlier.
